Advantages of Teaching Religion Lessons in Schools


Religion lessons in Indonesian schools have become a compulsory subject to this day, bearing in mind that our country is a religious country because of the 1st precept, namely "the one and only God".  However, unfortunately some people think that religious studies make some people use religion as a tool of violence/weapon. 


Eliminating religion lesson doesn't stop  religious violence. In fact, it helps students to clear the misunderstanding of what they are actually taught in their holy books. 


There are two verses from two different religions about it. “If two parties among the believers fall into a quarrel, make you peace between them with justice and be fair. For God loves those who are fair. The believers are but a single brotherhood; so make peace between your brothers." (Qur’an 49:9-10, cited in Abu-Nimer, 2010, p.83). Galatians 5:22-23 (Christians)

“But the fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law.” These verses and the others related, when be taught to pupils, can help them realize that the religious violences nowadays are done by irresponsible parties and not by a certain religion. 


One could argue that religion is a part of history– something that cannot be erased just like art, music, traditions, etcetera. As we live in Indonesia, a multicultural society, we must be familiar with the roots we originate from; our religion included.

Russo (2016): the freedom of religion is a guaranteed basic human right in most of the progressive constitutions. Religious studies give students a better understanding of their religions as they teach the basic pillars of every belief. It helps them either develop their faith by teaching the knowledge and skills in a certain religion (history of prophets, how to pray, etc) or to decide not to have faith at all by giving the wisdom they need. 


Religion also plays an important role in helping students to understand the history of the world. It may also help a student in explaining the patterns of politics, trade, and law. Religion subject makes it easier to teach students what is wrong and what is right since religion doesn't only teach about your relation with your God, but also how to have a healthy relationship with others. Religion forms the foundation of these major areas, which eventually have a direct impact on people’s way of life. In conclusion, equipping students with religious knowledge helps them to understand and appreciate the role of faith in shaping the world.
